What is this article about?

A major fire broke out in Smyrna on the evening of April 7, destroying 500 houses, vast merchandise, and killing many people, rivaling the damage from a recent earthquake. Smyrna, a key mercantile hub in the Ottoman Empire, faces these as potential signs of divine vengeance against Turkish cruelties toward Christians.

Full Text

We hear from Smyrna, that a Fire broke out there the 7th of last April, in the Evening, which has done almost as much Damage as the Earthquake, (mentioned in our last;) for, besides 500 Houses burnt down to the Ground, a vast Quantity of Merchandize was consumed, and many People destroyed. Smyrna was one of the richest and most mercantile Towns in all the Ottoman Empire; and we hope that these Two Scourges which it has so lately met with, are no more than Forerunners of God's Vengeance against the Ottoman Empire, for the Cruelty of the Turks against Christians, and the Barbarities they have committed upon them these 3 or 4 Centuries past.
