Extract of a private letter from PARIS, Feb. 20.
THE great plan of politics, which was in agitation between the capital Courts of Europe since the end of the last war (but was interrupted by the Premiership of the Duke D'Aiguillon) is now carrying on with the utmost assiduity, and draws very near to its crisis. The finishing of that very great plan is the object of the travel of the Arch Duke Maximilian. This Prince, after a short stay of about six weeks at our Court, will visit the Courts of Turin and Madrid, in order to give a finishing stroke to it; and we are informed, that the following Courts are in alliance, viz. France, Austria, Spain, Sardinia, Portugal (and as the report adds, the Prince Royal of Portugal will to this end be married to the youngest sister of our King) Sweden and Saxony. If these Courts should be in alliance, the rest of Europe, taken together, will hardly be a balance against them, and a most important revolution in the political system will be unavoidable; and it is greatly apprehended that the united provinces of Holland will be the first victim to those ambitious Courts, who, for centuries past beheld the uncommon success of the united States General with the utmost jealousy, and are absolutely determined to try the success of another attack, in which, if they should succeed, it will be high time for Great Britain to be on her guard as well as in Europe as in Asia and America. -But says R. Faber, it will be too late.
The French have already set their toils about us: They have gained the man behind the curtain who rules us all. The Thane of Cawder always longed to be a King; claimed kindred to the Royal Blood, and all the milky goodness of Duncan, the most courteous kin to him, could not allay his thirst of ambition.
