The following circumstance, which occurred here lately, does so much honour to the wisdom and justice of our Monarch, that it seems necessary to be made known to the world:—A certain jeweller, of this place, left a box of jewelry and precious stones with a certain nobleman of this city, in order that he might pick out such as he intended to purchase. The next morning the jeweller came to take away his box, but to his great astonishment, the nobleman told him he knew nothing of it, and that he had not seen it. The jeweller described the box, and mentioned every stone in it; but all his words were of no effect. At last he found himself under the necessity of making application to the Emperor. With tears in his eyes, he appeared before his Majesty, and related to him his grievance. His Majesty, after hearing the circumstances, seemed to be highly displeased at the dishonest behaviour of the nobleman; and ordered the jeweller to withdraw for a while into another chamber, and summoned the nobleman to appear before him immediately. He accordingly attended, and denied, in the most solemn manner, that he had ever seen the jeweller or his box. Upon which his Majesty ordered the jeweller to come forward, but the nobleman still denied it as before, and called the jeweller a madman, &c. After this the jeweller was again told to withdraw, and the Emperor ordered the nobleman to write to his wife as follows:
"My dear wife,
If you are desirous of preserving the life and liberty of your husband, give the bearer hereof the box of jewellery left with me yesterday, &c."
This letter was immediately dispatched to the wife of the nobleman, by one of the Emperor's own domestics, who was ordered to wait for the answer. This had the desired effect, as the box with the jewelry was immediately sent. The jeweler threw himself at the feet of his Majesty, and humbly thanked him for the restoration of his property. The punishment the dishonest nobleman is to receive for his perseverance in denying the matter, in presence of the Emperor, is not yet known.
