Extract of a letter from an officer at Greenville, to his friend in this Town, dated 7th July, 1796, at 11 o'clock P.M.
"General Wilkinson arrived here late this evening from Roche de Bout, via Fort Wayne—he left Col. Hamtramck with five hundred men, three months provisions, all our field artillery, ordnance, and military stores in an intrenched Camp, on the ground formerly occupied by Mc. Kee within half a mile of Fort Miamis:—An express from Col. Hamtramck arrived half an hour before the General, with a letter from Col. England (the British Commandant) informing General Wilkinson that he had received final orders to surrender the post under his Command.—Col. Hamtramck had orders previous to General Wilkinson's leaving him; and by this time has actual possession of Fort Miamis.—Captain Porter with seventy men is detached, and ordered to enter Detroit, where the National Flag is now flying on its Ramparts."
This desirable event has been accomplished without grievous expense or bloodshed; owing in a great measure to the wise and prudent measures adopted by our beloved President, nor ought the dignified behaviour of Major Campbell be forgot, when that Officer was menaced at Fort Miamis, in August one thousand seven hundred and ninety-four; but by a wise conduct prevented the effusion of human blood equally advantageous to both nations.
