ROAD TO THE NORTH.—A meeting of the citizens of Elko was held at the Cosmopolitan Hotel on Thursday evening last, for the purpose of adopting measures to secure the speedy construction of a good wagon and stage road from Elko to Cope district, to connect with the Idaho Road Company's road to Idaho and Oregon. The meeting was called to order, and on motion J. D. Treat was elected Chairman and P. M. Backus Secretary. O. R. Johnson, of Hill Beachey's Stage Line, addressed the meeting, stating that he had just returned from the Owyhee and had carefully examined the route of the proposed road. He was satisfied from a long experience in the business that a good wagon road could be built from this point to the Owyhee to intersect the Idaho Company's road at a cost of $10,000. He was also authorized to state that if the citizens would contribute half the amount necessary for the construction of the road, the parties were prepared to furnish the remainder and thereby secure the immediate completion of the road. The meeting was addressed by several other gentlemen, on the many benefits to be derived from a road to the north. A committee consisting of Messrs. Reinhart, Lauman, Pierson and Wyman, was appointed to solicit subscriptions for building the road and to consult with the party alluded to, Johnson, after which the meeting adjourned confident that the requisite amount would be subscribed immediately.
