The democrats make loud clamours
about the expenses of the late Convention. This is in perfect accordance
with most of their complaints, and is
founded on as good reasons as they generally urge to promote their electioneering purposes. But, let me ask them,
did they not generally vote in favour of
having a Convention? Did not the
leading men of their party introduce
propositions in the Convention, the discussion of which were one of the principal causes of the length of time occupied
by that venerable and respectable body?
Federal Electors, I appeal to your
own recollections and knowledge upon
this subject. With what propriety, then
do the democrats make use of the Convention as an electioneering engine-a
measure which, almost to a man, they
were in favour of, and in which they certainly occupied their full share of time?
When men resort to such feeble aids
for support, it is a sure indication of a
bad cause. Let not the Federal Republican Electors, by their inattention on
the first Monday of April next, suffer
the government of Massachusetts to go
into the hands of men who thus attempt
to deceive the people.
