Alex B. Stephenson, Supervisor of the Montana Highway Patrol, said the following laws enacted during the 1957 Legislative Assembly would be in effect after July 1, 1957. The new laws conform to the Uniform Vehicle Code and will modernize Montana's traffic code book by adopting laws already in force throughout the nation.
For trucks in excess of 6,000 pounds, the maximum speed has been increased from 45 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour.
A new speed limit for vehicles towing house trailers has been set at 50 miles per hour. The new law also prohibits persons from riding in house trailers while being moved.
Eliminated by the last legislative session was the use of the mechanical signal arm, and the new law requires that signals be given by means of the hand and arm, or by signal lamp.
Another feature of the new law provides that no person shall open the door of a motor vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless and until it is reasonably safe to do so, nor shall any person leave a door open upon the side of a vehicle available to moving traffic for a period of time longer than necessary to load or unload passengers.
