Full Text

To the freeholders of the Senatorial District, composed of the Counties of Louisa, Goochland & Henrico:

FELLOW CITIZENS,

Having determined to become a candidate for your suffrages at the next election for a member to represent you in the Senate of Virginia, and both my person & politics being probably unknown to a considerable proportion of the Citizens of the District, as I deem it indispensably necessary to a correct and judicious exercise of the right of suffrage, that the political principles of each candidate, should be fully understood by the electors: I beg leave at this time to declare to you, that I am, and always from my youth up, have been firmly attached to republican principles and republican measures. And that I hitherto have, and still shall support any administration in which those principles are adhered to, and shall always oppose one of a contrary character. I was a friend to the election of Mr. Madison as President, and am a friend to his administration, because I think it predicated upon the purest principles of republicanism, and guided by a constant wish to promote the prosperity & business of our common country; to defend & establish our essential rights, honor, and independence as a nation, which had been so judiciously asserted, and so ably vindicated by the administration of Mr. Jefferson.

If I should have the honor to be your representative, my official conduct will always conform to my principles, with a steady and unremitting attention to the common interests of the people whom I may represent.

I am, fellow citizens,

Your most obt. servant

WM. G. POINDEXTER.
