Preachers Looking Field Over To Urge Entry for Nov. 7 Election
A candidate to carry the banner of the drys in the November election on prohibition repeal is being sought in this county, and a committee of the Henderson Ministerial Association is canvassing the field in looking over possibilities. The preachers take the position that they are not trying to horn in," but are merely interested in seeing to it that the cause of the drys is not neglected.
Under the rules for the election, any candidate on either side must have a petition signed by not less than two percent of the electors who voted in the last presidential election, and that requires 87 names in this county. A wet and a dry candidate so selected will appear on the ballots in the November 7 election. Whichever wins will represent this county in casting the county's vote in the State convention to be held early in December to determine North Carolina's course on the adoption of the proposed 21st amendment to the Federal Constitution, which repeals the eighteenth amendment.
Thirty-one states already have voted on the question, and all of them have voted wet. Only five more states are needed to effect repeal, and North Carolina is one of several states that will vote on November 7.
