Progress of American Literature and Science.

THE second number of vol. 4th, of the Medical Repository has just appeared. In 1797 a quarterly publication was undertaken in the city of New-York, which exhibits the learning and philosophy of America in a more advantageous manner, than has ever been done in any other periodical work. It is entitled The Medical Repository, and Review of American Publications on Medicine, Surgery, and the auxiliary branches of Philosophy. Three volumes and an half are already completed, and they contain a valuable and instructive history of the subjects on which they treat. It is matter of surprise to every reader, that this country could afford, or any degree of diligence, collect so many original and excellent essays and articles of intelligence. But to understand this, it must be remembered that the Medical Repository holds the station of a National Work, and that its pages are filled with communications from almost all the States in the Union. By means of a regular and extensive correspondence, this general vehicle collects and concenters all recent discoveries in Medicine Surgery and the Physical Sciences, projects and inventions in the arts and modern developments in Natural History, In a word, such is the value and usefulness of this work. that it ought to be in the hands of every practitioner and student of Physic, and of all men of general knowledge, and to hold a place in every public and private Library.
