J. B. M.'S EXPLANATION.

J. B. M. sold the political editorial control of the Clarion openly and aboveboard, never attempting to conceal one step in the transaction. He consulted democrats who were his friends, and they advised him to do it. At the time J. B. M. did this he announced that whatever he wrote would be over his initials, and for that he was responsible. He admits that he has not the right to put anything in the Clarion of a political nature, without first consulting with the persons having control of the editorial. But whatever he says, he thinks. If he entertains different views from the republican committee, he keeps quiet. But the committee has not the money, neither has the whole party, nor all the parties, to make him say what he don't think. We know perfectly well that men often advocate measures that they know to be wrong, for money, and the editor of the Gazette may be one of this class, but J. B. M. claims to be above all such considerations, and he is vain enough to believe that no one who knows him believes that money would be any inducement for him to write one word on any matter of importance, or even of no importance, that he did not think was right. In all that he has ever said or written, he has merely asked the republicans what they thought of his notions, but he has never changed a word in his manuscripts, and could not be induced to do so. They never have objected, and if they had desired any change not in accordance with his notions, he would have suppressed the whole article. On the contrary, he has mostly found them to be fully as liberal as he desires, and if our old whig friends could only get from under the thumbs of their enemies and join in with the republicans of our county, we think things could be made to work along satisfactorily to them and to the interest of our state; but so long as they permit themselves to remain under the heel of the Kuklux democracy, almost afraid to say their "soul is their own" for fear of social ostracism or something else, there will always be evil feelings existing in our communities. This very feeling the Gazette and its class try to keep alive. They preach about high taxes to poor, ignorant creatures who do not seem to know enough to study out what the taxes are for, and publish tables to make their eyes and brain weak to look through, and if they had a little gumption they could easily see that the whole thing was gotten up to fuddle their weak brains. Of such is the recent extended tables gotten up by the Gazette to show how many have been disfranchised, when any fool knows it has no reference to the case.
