What State Are You From, Senator?
Last Friday the Senate killed the McGowan bill (SB 105) by a 30-25 vote, with all Republicans except one, Mahoney of Garfield, voting against the bill.
Thus went down the drain a workable proposal to collect income tax from people residing outside of Montana who receive considerable income off property, business investments, dividends made by Montana corporations, etc., in Montana.
This in the face of a greatly increased tax burden being in the making for the people of Montana.
SB 105, enacted into law, could have brought in as much as one million dollars annually off these non-resident's earnings in Montana. It would have applied to non-resident earnings off property, investments and dividends the same withholding principle whereby every wage-earner in Montana has no way out except to pay his state income tax.
SB 105 went down primarily because of the opposition of representatives of powerful corporate groups including major oil and mining companies headquartered outside of Montana, and the Montana Power Company of New Jersey. SB 105 presented a way whereby the State could recover some of the money made off Montana's wealth which flows into the pockets of the Queen of Holland (5 per cent owner of Anaconda Co.), the big investment bankers in New York, Boston, Chicago and Wilmington, and other non-resident stockholders generally of various corporations doing business in Montana.
Defeat of SB 105 not only robs the state treasury of a considerable sum of money each year, but also slates a continuation of the unfair competition offered by out-of-state owners of businesses operating in Montana to bonafide Montana businessmen who spend their earnings here and aid materially in paying the way of state government.
As you struggle in the years ahead to pay the higher tax load this legislature is thrusting upon you, bear in mind how YOUR senator voted on SB 105. It wouldn't hurt for you to let him know, and often, how you feel about his concern for the well-being of the widely-scattered stockholders of Anaconda, Montana Power, and the major oil companies, while being not the least bit hesitant over raising your state taxes by almost 75 per cent. After all, YOU did elect him to represent YOUR interests. (The Senate roll call on SB 105 is printed elsewhere in this issue for your permanent record.)
