GREEN GOLD TO VALLEY
Imperial Valley, embarking upon its own new deal, may look forward confidently to its success in a degree far less disputed than that of the Rooseveltian New Deal. Agricultural Commissioner B. A. Harrigan believes. The new deal in question is the lettuce deal, just getting under way. The market is feeling the usual holiday trend, which is downward for lettuce, but once the Jan. 1 milestone has been passed, Harrigan believes the market will be firm and stronger for Imperial Valley lettuce.
There could be no more encouraging news for every person in the valley. There is always room for the unexpected, but the factors in favor of success this year are unusually large. Weather has been perfect for the lettuce deal. Continuing for a few weeks, it will bring lettuce here along to the best quality in years, and at the same time will do much to strengthen the market. Salinas and San Fernando are out of the picture of competition. Phoenix, now at the peak of its fall deal, will not seriously effect the valley market. Growers, realizing the situation, have held back a part of the deal by about two weeks. Their wisdom is becoming apparent.
There is nothing more important to Imperial Valley than the lettuce deal. It means millions of dollars worth of business to this region. Its effects are felt in payrolls and in every store and shop. A good deal can swing the balance to or from prosperity. Together with the later cantaloupe deal, it is all important.
This year, Imperial Valley's new deal is the best of all.
