Full Text

Dr. Marks has just closed his Female Institute, and I am sorry to say, forever. No man ever lived among us, who has done so much for the cause of Female Education, and I am sure that by the better sex at least, his services will be long remembered. Between ten and twenty years ago, he memorialized our Legislature, and attempted to obtain some action by which the standard of Female Education should be elevated, but succeeded only so far, as to get a favorable report from the Committee, of which the lamented Grimke was Chairman. The Legislature refused to do any thing; but with a spirit and devotion rarely equalled, he established an Institution in the vicinity of the Town, at a very great expense. and to the present time has consecrated his entire energies to this holy purpose. Of the manner in which he has discharged his duties, thousands in this. and the contiguous States, can bear testimony. I regard the discontinuance of his School, as a public calamity. I send you a pamphlet written by him, entitled "Hints on Female Education."
