A RAIL GAVE WAY
And a Train of Coaches Was Derailed
on
the Santa Fe Road.

KANSAS CITY, Oct. 31.—At daybreak this morning the Chicago, Santa Fe and California vestibule train was derailed near Carrollton, Mo. A rail gave way near that place and all the coaches except the dining and sleeping cars were thrown from the track. Nearly every one in the smoking car was injured, and the express man on the baggage car was fatally hurt by his body being crushed under a falling safe. Thomas Beck of this city received fatal injuries. In all there was about five who were slightly injured. Colonel Sutton, an official of the Santa Fe, took charge of the injured, some of whom were transferred to a Wabash train and brought to this city and the remainder were removed to the sleeping car coaches which were not derailed. The accident was caused by the spreading of a rail, due to the softening of the roadbed by recent rains. Damage to the road is estimated at about $20,000.
