It would seem that Mattie Hawkins, a nymph du pave and beer-jerker, who is better known as "Big Mat," from her immensity of person, having an old grudge to settle with another prostitute, known as Mag Wilson visited the apartment of the latter and "walked into her" with her fists, pummelling her about the head and face until both her "peepers" were closed and the "claret" began to flow in great profusion from her nasal protuberance.
In the fracas Mag. picked up a hatchet lying near by and directed a blow at the head of Mat but missed, and fortunately before she could repeat the effort the police were on hand and put a period to the row by taking Mat off to the station, while her "catch weight" opponent in the melee, in consideration of her having got the worse of the matter, was permitted to remain.
On the case coming up before the Commissioner this morning. "Big Mat" was fined five dollars. A warrant for her arrest, on the charge of assault and battery, was afterward issued by Esquire Glisson, and the hearing of the case set for Wednesday next.
