Full Text

Norwich, July 7. Last Monday evening Mr. Francis Green, an eminent merchant of Boston, put up at a tavern in Windham: As soon as the inhabitants of that town had notice of his arrival (and recollected that he was one of the insidious crew who fabricated and subscribed the adulatory address to strengthen the hands of that parriciduous tool to despotism, Thomas Hutchinson, Esq: late Governor of Massachusetts-Bay, previous to his departure for England) they immediately assembled, and expressed great uneasiness that so daring an enemy to the liberties of his country should be entertained or suffered to remain in their town. A committee was appointed, who intimated to Mr. Green the desire of the people, that he should forthwith leave the town; but he pleaded business, and remained there until Tuesday forenoon, when the threat of exalting him upon a cart, operated so powerfully that he decamped with precipitation.

On Tuesday afternoon, intelligence of the proceedings of the people of Windham, were circulated in this town; the friends of Liberty assembled upon the plain, and being certainly informed that Mr. Green intended to be here next morning, they agreed upon a proper signal to be given the moment he should make his entry into town, that they might wait upon him und tender their devoirs in form.

On Wednesday morning at 7 o'clock, Mr. Manning, the grave digger, announced the before-mentioned gentleman's arrival, by ringing the meeting-house bell; a numerous and respectable concourse of people instantly appeared upon the plain, and appointed a committee, who waited upon Mr. Green, and desired him to depart the town in 15 minutes, he appeared reluctant, and made the same excuse that he did at Windham, but with much less success, or a horse and cart was provided, so that he had no other alternative, but to mount the cart or his own carriage; he chose the latter, and set out properly attended, with drums beating, horns blowing, &c.
