The whole country rings with shouts of victory from the Administration presses, because one or two formerly strong Jackson States, which had been so nearly reclaimed as recently, by small majorities, to be carried by the Whigs, have now, by equally small majorities, and the most desperate exertions, been carried by their adversaries. It is natural that every thing which offers the least hope of a reprieve should be hailed with joy by a party which had looked upon its fate as sealed. But, notwithstanding these occasional and slight retrogressions, it must be obvious to every observer that the Whig cause has, in the main, steadily acquired strength, and that of the opposite party proportionably declined. Within the last ten years, almost every State of the Union has been Jacksonian in its politics; but now let any man survey the whole ground, and how different is the case! Without adverting to those States previously unalterably reclaimed from Jacksonism, we can refer to the general results of the recent elections with exultation. Even those elections, which the Van Buren party proclaim to have been so disastrous to the Whigs, have given to us, for the first time, the Legislatures of three large States, besides an accession of members of Congress. Pennsylvania, which four years ago boasted a Jackson majority of sixty thousand votes, has now a Whig Legislature. In Georgia, heretofore inveterately Jacksonian, the Whig party have carried the Legislature; in Illinois, the same. These are solid triumphs, and, while they exhibit incontestable proof of the radical change which has been steadily going on in public sentiment, in various and distant portions of the Union, they furnish ample reason for hope and confidence that this change will still advance, embracing State after State, until the whole Union shall be redeemed from the unhappy and mischievous delusion which has so long and so obstinately afflicted it.
