LINES, OCCASIONED BY THE TEDIOUS AND GLOOMY WINTER.
O ruthless season, unpropitious weather,
When will your gloomy days be past?
When will your storms have ceased to gather
And hushed to silence your tempestuous blast?
Four tedious months are gone and over
Since you've been raging o'er my head,
With unremitting shower on shower,
Drenching the ground on which I tread.
Awhile the plains are nought but mire,
Much to the weary traveller's cost,
Anon the bellowing blasts rise higher,
Binding the earth in chains of frost.
Thus wearied out with two extremes,
I've past the tedious winter round,
Still hoping fate would change the scenes,
Alas! my hopes are yet uncrowned.
My cranium* is the seat of gloom,
The dura mater† a muddy realm,
No pleasing thoughts can there find room
In cerebrum‡ or cerebellum.§
Come South West Winds, and on thy wing
Send thy salubrious breezes forth,
And usher in the smiling Spring:
Drive the cold damps to regions north——
Come with thy love-creating power,
And clothe with green the landscapes over,
Bring now and then a gentle shower,
Bedspangle all the fields of clover,
With sweetest flowers, to cheer our noses.
Sweet Flora, come, with gentle hand
Plant, in our back grounds, blooming roses,
Spread joy and singing through the land.
Hail, bounteous May, thou shalt inspire
Our hearts with love, and passions strong;
Our breasts shall glow with warm desire——
We'll hail thee with our early song
*The skull.
†The covering of the brain.
‡The upper part of the brain.
§The lower part of the brain.
