Private letters from Hamburgh leave little room to hope that the French will even refrain from seizing that place, as well as the king's continental dominions. Passengers by the packet, which left Cuxhaven on the 6th, say that Hanover has been actually taken possession of by the French troops, to the amount of 16,000 men; that a French corps of 8,000 were within two days march of Cuxhaven, & that 10,000 were directing their route for Stade. The agent at Cuxhaven so fully expected their arrival there, that he had detained the packet three days, till a bye-boat arrived in which he might, in case of necessity, make his escape.

All British ships in Hamburgh were hastening away, some only with half cargoes on board, in consequence of an order fixed up at the Exchange by the British consul. Fourteen merchantmen had arrived at Cuxhaven under convoy of a frigate bound to Hamburgh, but upon learning the above intelligence, had resolved to come back.
