BALTIMORE, MD., Aug. 2.—A conference meeting was held here yesterday. Arthur P. Gorman, President; Stephen Gambrill, Secretary and Paymaster and Judge Hamill and John Humbird, Directors of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, and a committee of boatmen, relative to the strike of the latter. It was thought by the boatmen that the Presidents of the coal companies would have been present at the meeting. These companies have stated that they will hold no conference with the boatmen until the blockade is broken, and the boatmen come to Cumberland and make satisfactory explanation as to their recent outrage in burning one of the canal boats at that place. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company are acting merely as arbitrators between the boatmen and the coal companies. No satisfactory adjustment.
