Full Text
A very large and enthusiastic meeting of Democrats friendly to the nomination of President Tyler as the candidate of the party at the approaching Presidential election and in favor of the immediate re-annexation of Texas to the United States, was held at Ebner's Railroad Hotel, Richmond, on Tuesday evening, 30th ult. The meeting was organized by the appointment of the following officers:
President—Col. SIDNEY JONES.
EXTRACTS FROM THE RESOLUTIONS.
Resolved, That this meeting, after having examined fully the conduct of John Tyler since his elevation to the Executive Chair of the Union, feel themselves imperatively called upon to say, that they believe that he is not only entitled to the nomination of the Democratic party to the high office of President of the United States; but also, that he is the only democrat who can be elected.
Resolved, That we heartily approve of the proposed National Democratic Tyler Convention, to be held in the city of Baltimore.
Resolved, That as Mr. Van Buren cannot receive our support in '44, we deem it to be our duty thus to make this public declaration prior to the meeting of the convention at Baltimore in May.
Resolved, That we notice with great satisfaction the unanimity of sentiment which prevails in the Democratic family in reference to the re-annexation of Texas to the United States, regarding it as another evidence of the popularity of President Tyler with the bone and sinew of the party, and as another proof that sound policy demands his nomination as our candidate for the Presidency, if we desire that victory should perch upon our banner.
Resolved, That, after having fully understood the designs of the British in relation to Texas, we believe that it is immensely important to the interests of the whole Union that this Government should forthwith permit Texas to become one of the territories of this Union.
Resolved, That we agree with General Jackson that this is the golden opportunity for re-annexing Texas, and that Congress ought not to allow it to pass by, and thus, perhaps, lose the chance of restoring Texas to this Republic.
Resolved, THAT WE THIS DAY PLACE IN NOMINATION JOHN TYLER, AS OUR CANDIDATE FOR THE PRESIDENCY IN '44, AND THAT WE WILL BEAR HIS NAME ON OUR BROAD BANNER FROM THIS TIME ONWARD TILL WE HAVE VICTORIOUSLY MET OUR OPPONENTS AT THE POLLS; FOR, WITH HIS VETOES, AND HIS ADVOCACY OF THE RE-ANNEXATION OF TEXAS TO THIS UNION. A GLORIOUS TRIUMPH AWAITS US.
