FOR THE SPECTATOR.

The Kentucky "Yankee" who lives at Vandalia, and writes pieces for the Illinois Intelligencer, and dates them in Bond county, has come out again in a flaming production. He means to play the very d-l with M. Churchill for having "the hardihood to quote Mr. Jefferson's observations on the demoralizing influence of slavery upon the community. But he does not stop here; but attacks his friends the Convention party in Madison. He admits, to be sure, that they were "honest," in their opinions; but insinuates that they were not over wise and that they took it upon themselves to instruct their representatives, when they stood in need of instruction themselves The ordinance of 1787, he says, is of no more force than a sheet of blank paper! What will the Madison Instructors say to this? Will not some of the learned and enlightened gentlemen who instructed our representatives that slavery could not be introduced into this state, even though the people should desire it--will not some of these come out and put down the mighty Kentucky "Yankee?" What do you say, gentlemen? Are you satisfied with the compliment paid to you by your friend at Vandalia? He says he has the honor of being personally acquainted with you, and believes you to be honest but very modestly considers you a pack of fools for believing that the ordinance of 1787 had any more force than a piece of blank paper. Do you not begin to wish that you "never had the honor of his acquaintance?" Come out gentlemen, and defend your doctrines.

Main Argument

the 'kentucky yankee' wrongly dismisses the 1787 ordinance as meaningless and mocks the madison convention party as foolish for opposing slavery introduction; the madison 'instructors' should defend their anti-slavery stance against this attack.
