Full Text

The Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary is compelled by the Italian courts to pay a big sum in respect of property in Rome which he owns but has never seen, nor wished to see.

The property in question is the famous Villa d'Este, which he inherited from the Duke Modena.

The Archduke has never visited the villa, because he has vowed never to enter Rome, which, as a fervent Catholic he considers the "prison of the Pope."

The villa was lent to the late Cardinal Hohenlohe, who found it necessary to spend a large sum on improvements to make it habitable. The Cardinal's heir claimed the sum spent by his Eminence from the present owner of the villa, and won the day in his suit against the Archduke. The latter is in great chagrin at having to pay for repairs to property he has never used and does not want.
