President Favors Giving Commerce
Commission That Power.
Washington. Aug. 20.-The perils of
the road for the traveling public are
to be decreased if the program adopt-
ed
by
the administration shall prove
effective.
The appalling
number of
victims
which
the railroads have ex-
acted
has led
the president to care-
fully
consider
a
way
to
better the
conditions.
The result probably will be a strons
recommendation in his
forthcoming
annual message that legislation be en-
acted which will permit the federar
government to make investigations or
accidents affecting interstate trains.
That there is grave need of protec-
tive legislation is shown by the re-
ports in regard to accidents issued
by the Interstate Commerce commis-
sion for the last eight years.

1907, inclusive, there have
beenkilled 27,744 ana Injured 406,-
298.
Under
authority
granted
by
the
last congress the commerce commis-
sion is making a thorough test of safe-
ty appliances. The actual work is be-
ing done by a board of experts.
