Raleigh, Nov. 14.—Plans for the organization of a fishermen's cooperative association, such as is now in operation in Portland, Maine, and several other New England fishing centers, are now being worked out with a view to organizing a similar association among the fishermen of North Carolina, it was learned here today.
Assistant Director Paul Kelly, of the Department of Conservation and Development, has just returned from a trip to Morehead City and Beaufort, where he conferred with fishermen, and with Captain John A. Nelson, State fisheries commissioner; R. S. Prescott, executive secretary of the Carteret County Commercial Fishermen's Association and others with regard to ways and means to rehabilitate the fishing industry along the North Carolina coast.
Those familiar with the present condition of the fishing industry there are convinced that a strong organization composed of the commercial fishermen in the State, if possible in the form of a cooperative marketing association, will do more to help the fishermen by stabilizing prices and stopping cut-throat price cutting, than any other one thing, Kelly said.
But the difficulty so far has been in getting the fishermen themselves to stand by each other.
