THE Liberty of the Press has been often defended, and is said to be one of the greatest Bulwarks of the British Constitution :---Notwithstanding which, many in our Day, seem longing after the same Onions of Egypt, with which Turkish Bashaws French Grandees, & the Romish Clergy, so plentifully regale themselves, at the Expence of the inferior Part, as they are , called, of Mankind ; yet while the Liberty of the Press subsists, they are apprehensive they cannot finally prevail.---Hence the Printer of this Paper, has often experienced Attacks, Insults and Threatnings, both from Laity and Clergy :---Some who never took his Paper have threatened to crush him, others drop it, & use their Influence with their Friends to do the same ; and many take it, and never pay for it.-----Now; whatever may be his own private Principles, he has always kept his Press open to all ; and as much may be said on both Sides, it seems but just that each Side should have fair Play, that Truth, may prevail---The Body Politick is often sick, and a free Discussion is certainly the best Means of pointing out the Disease, that so a suitable Remedy may be applied.---He is very sorry to find so many, who will not bear the Truth.---A bad Sign in all Ages ! --He could wish indeed, that Writers would and could openly avow their Sentiments ; but that it seems,is a Measure not quite so consistent with Freedom as the contrary. ----He is often blamed when Names, are too, plainly pointed out ; but whoever will candidly view the English Prints, will there find Men of the highest Character pointed out by Name, who have no other Way to exculpate themselves but by proving their. Innocence, which if they do, the Shame falls doubly on the Accuser, & their-Character is the brighter ; while those who are unable to do this, generally amend their Conduct, or sit down with the Contempt they deserve ; and this often proves a great Restraint to Vicey--The Printer would gladly continue in his Business during the Remainder of his short Span of Life, tho' should many more drop his Paper, he dares not disavow those- Principles of Freedom he has always adopted, yet he fears leaving off printing a News-Paper, when he can no longer get a Sufficiency of Customers to support it, because he knows he must-----die.
