Full Text

Aug. 31. On Saturday last the Governor, the Mayor of the city, and the Corporation, dined with the President of the United States.

We are informed, that on this occasion the President took an opportunity to express his great reluctance at leaving the city, and those citizens who have taken so much pains to treat him, not only with dignified respect but with reverence and esteem, as the Father and Patron of the United States. Mrs. Washington, also, seemed hurt at the idea of bidding adieu to these hospitable shores.

We are told also, that the President took this occasion to inform the Corporation of his intention to leave the city on Monday, but expressed a wish, that it might not be noticed.

Yesterday morning the President of the United States, with his family, set off from this city for his seat at Mount Vernon, in Virginia, where we understand he will reside, until his presence is necessary at Philadelphia.

He was accompanied to his barge by the Governor of this State, the principal officers of government, the Mayor and Corporation, Officers of the city, and a number of the citizens who bade him a most affectionate farewell. The parting scene was solemn and affecting: All was quietness, save the report of the cannon that were fired on his embarkation—the countenance of the citizen visibly expressed the emotion of the mind on the departure of him whom all hold so dear—the heart was full—the tear dropped from the eye; it was not to be restrained; it was seen; and the President appeared sensibly moved by this last mark of esteem for his character and affection for his person.
