OHIO LEGISLATURE.

IN SENATE.

Friday, Dec. 26th.

COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE,

The bill to exempt Steamboat taxation in certain cases, was considered in committee of the whole, Mr. Hopkins in the chair; and reported back without amendment. The bill provides that the owners of Steamboats, which are employed on lines not within this State, shall be exempt from taxation on such stock.

Mr. Walke moved to amend the bill, so as to include only such Steamboats as are employed between ports, neither of which are within this State; but, before the question was taken, the bill was laid on the table.

On motion of Mr. Anthony, the report of the Judiciary committee on the subject of the currency, was taken up, committed to a committee of the whole and, on motion of Mr. Osborn, the Senate resolved itself into a committee of the whole on that report; and the same being reported back, without amendment, Mr. Disney offered for adoption the following resolution; which was committed to a committee of the whole, Mr. Osborn in the chair

Resolved, That the report of the standing committee on the Judiciary, on the subject of the currency, be recommitted to the same committee; with instructions to report a bill prohibiting the County and State Treasurers from receiving, in payment of taxes, Bank notes or bills of a less denomination than five dollars; and further prohibiting the said Treasurers from receiving the notes of any Bank or Banks of this State, which shall not surrender so much of their charters as authorizes them to issue notes of a less denomination than five dollars.

Mr. Hitchcock moved to amend the resolution, by striking out all after the word "Resolved;" which was decided in the negative; and the committee rose, after a protracted debate, and reported the resolution back without amendment.

Mr. Morris then moved so to amend the resolution, as to prohibit the Treasurers from receiving any Bank bills, of any denomination whatever; which was lost—Yeas 12, Nays 24.

Mr. Anthony next moved to amend the resolution so as to refer it to the committee on Finance; which was agreed to; and the question was then taken on agreeing to the resolution, and decided in the negative, as follows:

YEAS—Messrs. Alexander, Anderson, Atkinson, Blackburn, Doan, Disney, Hawkins, Hopkins, Houston, McMechan, McDowell, Ravenscroft, Shepherd, Spangler, Taylor, Vance, and Vincent—17.

NAYS—Messrs. Anthony, Howard, Johnston, Kendall, King, Lind, Lyman, Morris, Morse, Newell, Osborn, Pilson, Robinson, Steele, Walke, Whittlesey, Yeo, and Speaker—18.

Mr. Disney then moved that the report be laid upon the table; which was agreed to, and the Senate adjourned.
