Representatives were in attendance and heard Gov. M. E. Thompson at the opening session declare that he would request at the next General Assembly that Georgia accept the provisions of the Hill-Burton Act by allocating funds to match the federal appropriations prescribed in the legislation. Already the House of Representatives of the state has approved state allocation of $3,000,000. The measure was not passed by the last General Assembly however.
Under the Hill-Burton Act $15,000,000 has been made available to Georgia, for the establishment of hospitals and expanded hospital facilities servicing the public at large. Any group of citizens with the approval of the state might muster funds for public hospitals and receive matched financial aid from federal funds.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Among the recommendations offered by the various committees were:
Committee on General Hospitals:
1. That steps be taken to get state enacted legislation favoring the plan. 2. That smaller counties be urged to grasp the advantages offered by the proposal. 3. That a study be made of the advisability of establishing a minimum 200 bed hospital at the University of Georgia Medical School, Athens, Ga.
Committee on Medical, Dental and Nursing Personnel: 1. That adequate stress be made on thoroughly publicizing the proposal. 2. That dental and nursing personnel be extended and available to all of the people of Georgia
Committee on Clinics, Health Centers and Health Education: 1. That separate health clinics be provided throughout the state, specializing in treatment, prevention and diagnoses of patients. 2. That priority of such be given to the needy sections.
Committee on Mental Health: 1. Plans to set up a child guidance program. 2. A study of the commitment law on mental patients. 3. Plans for screening center for patients.
A number of Negro delegates were in attendance at the conference and placed on the various committees.
