A new Community Center for Negroes in Gainesville, Georgia will bear the name of the Ludie Andrews Community Center, in honor of Mrs. Ludie Andrews, superintendent of the MacVicar Hospital at Spelman College.
The name was suggested by Miss Dora Lee Chamblee, a graduate of Spelman College, and a volunteer worker in the Center. Miss Chamblee's suggestion was warmly endorsed by a group of workers in Gainesville because of the inspiration given them by Mrs. Andrews at the time she served as a teacher of the Atlanta-Presbyterian Colored Woman's Conference for social workers, and also in the Atlanta University summer school.
Miss Chamblee has been working for several years to have the Center established. She was receiving the hearty cooperation of the late Dr. John Hope when his death occurred.
The Center was given by the City of Gainesville with WPA funds. It sponsors a nursery-kindergarten, a recreation program for adults as well as youth, and a training course for servants. Because of a definite lack of cultural facilities in this area, courses in the drama are given and provision made for the showing of wholesome movies. Plans are now under way to provide means for caring for babies of working mothers and to establish a community library.
The formal opening of the Center will be held on Sunday, March 17.
