CONTINUED. PROV. X: 9.
2. The upright walker treads upon firm ground. He builds his practice, not upon the perilous bog or devouring quicksands of bold and uncouth paradoxes, but upon solid, safe, and well-tried principles.
If God shall not cease to be, if he will not let go the reins, if his word cannot deceive, if the wisest men are not infatuated, if the main props and pillars of society do not fail, he that walketh uprightly doth proceed on sure grounds.
3. The upright person doth walk steadily, holding his main course without flinching or wavering. His integrity is an excellent ballast, holding him tight and well-poised in his deportment, so that the waves of temptation dashing on him do not make him roll in uncertainty, or topple over into unworthy practices.
Lust, passion, humor, interest, are very mutable things, so that he who is guided by them must needs be "double-minded and unstable in all his ways." But good conscience persisteth unvaried through all circumstances and vicissitudes. For it steereth by immovable pole-stars, the inviolable rules of duty; it aimeth at marks which no force can stir out of their place. Whence an upright person, in all conditions, is the same man and goeth the same way. Let the matter be fair or foul, let the world smile or frown, let him get or lose by it. he will do what his duty requireth.
