Full Text
A minister never appears to as little advantage as he does when he is explaining to his flock how he would edit a daily newspaper. Here is the Rev. Mr. Rose, of Milwaukee, who aims to raise the tone of the public press and do away with its "sensationalism, impurity and general wickedness by making journalism absolutely personal." "I would dismiss," he says, "the affectation of the editorial 'we' under which newspaper men with their habitual modesty are wont to conceal their personality. I would break up this ambuscade in print. I would give all these voices, alike those that cry truth and those that cry falsehood and slander, a body and a responsible personality. I would have printed at the head of every newspaper the name of every man responsible for its utterances. The political, religious, society editor, the critic of art and music, the correspondents, the reporters, should put forth their work over their own names." The Paris newspapers are conducted on this "personal basis." Mr. Rose can have Le Figaro translated—politics, crime, gossip, jokes, signatures and all—and circulated among the members of his congregation, in order that they may find out for themselves that journalists who sign their names can not be sensational, impure or naughty!
