VICTORY AND VENGEANCE
Just after a United States Senator finished lauding it for its "democracy." the United Steelworkers Union voted to throw out the men who had been unsuccessful candidates for high union office.
Under the laws, these expelled union members will be able to keep the jobs they now have. But should they lose these jobs, they would be unable to get or hold other jobs in the steel industry, because union membership is a requirement for employment just about everywhere in their trade.
This kind of infringement of individual rights on the part of union bosses bent on keeping power is one of the most pressing arguments for a right-to-work law. Such a law removes union membership as a requirement for employment, while supporting the employee's right to join a union if he wishes.
Eighteen states have such a law, and six are voting on one.
In states that have right-to-work laws, union bosses can't punish those who run for office against them by depriving them of the right to earn a living.
