"A number of influential citizens, hitherto connected with the opposition, have severed their connexion with it upon this ground. And the discussions, private and public, now going on, are doing no little to strengthen the hands of the friends of American labor."
[Cincinnati Gaz.
Our attention has been called to this statement by a friend, who promises if the Gazette will name the persons who have changed on this ground, he will name two Whigs on the other side who go against protective tariff.
But the above statement of the Gazette is a contradiction of the pretence hitherto set up, that the humbug of Home-League was one without distinction of party! If this were true, why would persons who become tariff men, find it necessary to "sever their connexion with the opposition?"
The call, therefore, for a meeting of the Home-League men at Hamilton, "without distinction of party," is thus acknowledged to be gross hypocrisy. Only consider the conduct of those HONEST advocates of home labor! They publish a list of persons to serve on committees to procure signatures for that unfortunate Tariff Memorial, and, without their consent, include a number of well known democrats—and now come forward and say,
"A number of influential citizens, hitherto connected with the opposition, have severed their connexion with it, upon this ground" of protection. Here is a specimen of Whig honor and honesty and veracity.—Cin. Enquirer.
