PLAN AUTOMOBILE ROAD
FROM PORTLAND TO UTAH

Portland, May 7—Efforts along automobile highways between Oregon and Utah, asleep since the croaking complaints of lumbering prairie schooners westward bound ceased, will be started in to wakefulness by the part of speeding automobiles soon, if the plans of the Portland Automobile Club are carried to completion. The club is fostering a movement to establish a well marked route between The Dalles down through Central Oregon, across Southern Idaho, via Boise, then to Salt Lake City, where it will connect with the main transcontinental highway that is being boosted for the 1915 run to San Francisco. Properly marked, it is expected that the proposed route will divert many automobile parties into Portland, via The Dalles or Albany, and then they can take the Pacific highway to San Francisco. The new route will be called the "Central Oregon highway."

Among the roads that have played prominent parts in the development and early history of the West that will be rehabilitated in part by the proposed route will be the "Old Oregon Trail," the "California Trail," "The Dalles Military Road," and the "Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Military Road."
