Full Text

DUEL.--M. Thiers, the celebrated French historian, and a Red Republican, by the name of Louis Bixio exchanged shots without harming each other, a few days before the sailing of the last steamer.

"The cause of the meeting seems to have been the assertion of Bixio in the Assembly, that he had heard Thiers say, that the election of Louis Napoleon would be a disgrace to France. A cartel instantly passed--the parties, with their friends, drove to the Bois de Boulogne, and exchanged shots at twenty paces; and then they drove back unharmed to the chamber to hear the conclusion of the debate--the whole affair consuming less than half an hour--commencing at four in the afternoon and the belligerents being hardly missed from their seats."
