The Navy is asking for volunteers for basic submarine training according to a SecNav communique issued last week to all Naval activities.
According to the announcement, submarine nuclear power training and the fleet ballistic missile submarine programs utilize many trained enlisted personnel. This leaves many vacancies for the enlisted basic submarine course.
Personnel in all applicable ratings indicated in Enlisted Transfer Manual, Chapter 10, may apply for initial sub training. Requests are particularly solicited in EN, MM, ET, IC, TM, EM, SO and RM ratings, pay grades E-4 through E-7. Volunteers are also requested from FT and GS ratings in pay grades E-4 through E-6.
After graduation from basic submarine school, volunteers who were homeported or based in New London, Norfolk, Key West, Charleston, San Diego or Pearl Harbor may return to their former homeport or base for duty aboard a submarine when service requirements permit.
Deadline for submission of requests in accordance with the communique is 31 Dec. 1960.
