Full Text

Repudiation, or opposition to taxation to pay debts contracted, which amounts to nearly the same thing as repudiation, appear to have been utterly unsuccessful in the late elections, at least in the democratic party. If we are not mistaken, however, the whigs have chosen an anti-tax ticket in Lancaster county. In Maryland there were some few instances of repudiationists running in both parties, but they were in every instance defeated, although the party to which they belonged was the stronger one in the county. Rational democracy goes against the contracting of large national, state or city debts, and does not object to constitutional restraints upon their creation. But when contracted constitutionally and with the authority and approbation of the people, it deems it just to pay honorably and speedily to the last cent.
