The beautiful, little girl lay sleeping peacefully, her blond curly head cradled tenderly in the arms of a nurse. As they waited in a taxi at the Dillingham Airport on the afternoon of July 10 for the Tenth Rescue Plane that was then circling the field to rush the child to Anchorage for medical observation following three heart-rending days of continuous convulsions.
Karen Bennis, daughter of Esther and Jack Bennis of Dillingham, did not stir as she was placed gently on a stretcher and put aboard the plane, which took off immediately on the first lap of a long, difficult journey--not only for this sick little child, but also for the weary, worn young mother accompanying her and the tense father standing on the dusty runway waving encouragingly to the little child who could not wave back.
The casual observer could not know that Karen "slept" by constant sedation and that she was being taken away for what might be years and that she was leaving behind everything she loves; and, only the heart that has ached relentlessly over the emptiness of a little crib could detect the deep sorrow so gallantly hidden from public scrutiny.
When you thank God tonight for your blessings of good health and kiss your laughing, happy little daughter and tuck her in to dream, spare a moment and a prayer for little Karen whose cross is far too
