We learn from Petersburg, that the Senate, to whom the Empress had sent all the affidavits, and depositions, relating the attempt made by Mirowitz to deliver the late unfortunate prince IVAN, has concluded its deliberation, and declared Mirowitz guilty of high treason, and worthy of death.
Not contented with pronouncing this sentence, they have presented a warm animated address to her Imperial majesty, entreating her to have speedy and exemplary justice executed, on this offender, and not to let the tenderness of her compassion and humanity go so far, as to mitigate the punishments he deserves, to consider him, in any respect, an object of pity.
It is said, on the other hand that powerful intercession is made by those who placed their confidence so far in this officer, as to send him out of his turn to mount guard in a garrison where a prisoner of such distinction and consequence was kept.
Be that as it may, it is certain that her Imperial majesty has sent an answer to the Senate to the following amount: That it is their business to judge according to the evidence that has been exhibited to them; but that it is her prerogative to decide whether or no that judgment is to be executed with rigour, or to be tempered by mercy.
(M. Mirowitz was publickly beheaded September 26, and behaved with the greatest resignation)
