3 Whites Charged
With
Rape
Of Negro

YAZOO CITY, Miss. (ANP)--
Three young white men last
week were being held here with-
out bond after being charged
with raping a 42-year-old Ne-
gro mother and her 5-year-old
daughter in an early morning
raid on a farm house where
the mother and her four chil-
dren were staying. All face
either death or life imprison-
ment, according to Mississippi
law.
The men were identified by
District Attorney Bill Waller
as Bobby Smith, 18 years old.
Charles Coffey, 20, and his
brother, Louis Coffey, 22. All
are residents of Yazoo County.
According to Waller, the
three broke into the farm house
about 2 a.m. Wednesday (Nov.
16). As they entered, three
other children, all teen-agers,
fled in fear. The white men
threatened the woman and her
child and then attacked them,

CHILD IN BAD SHAPE
Meanwhile, the girl was re-
ported by officials at Univer-
sity Hospital in Jackson where
she was confined to be "in a
pretty bad way." The report
said the child "definitely was
raped." So badly was the
child, that police couldn't get
a clear story from her.

FEARS RACIAL UNREST
Waller said the names of
the men were not immediately
released because of the racial
aspects of the case.
The local Negro community
is believed to be quite shocked
over the incident.
The attackers, however, must
not have been unduly concerned
about their beastly crime. One
was arrested at about daybreak
in a car with the Negro woman.
Another was taken in custody on
a highway near the house shortly
after. The third was arrested
still later after police and a
bloodhound searched an area
south of Yazoo City.
The three children who fled
the farm house had informed
police of the attack.
