LIFE.

The leaf that lies, in autumn's hour,
The tree that fades upon the storm,
Are emblems of the silent power,
Of time and change o'er man and them:
Yet happier in the arbor's shade,
For spring will other leaves restore
And summer will new flowers create,
As bright as those which bloomed before.
But when life's morning dream departs,
And grief succeeds to fancy's bliss,
Oh! what can cheer the lonely heart,
Or soften sorrow's bitterness!
Years will roll onward time will bring
Its various changes, but in vain—
There is in life but one short opening
And it can ne'er return again.
