HOUSE Of ASSEMBLY.
POUGHKEEPSIE, Jan. 23, 1788.
The House met pursuant to adjournment.
The Bill to relieve cities and towns from such charges as may arise from bastard children born within the same, was read a third time: Mr. Benson then made a motion, which was seconded by Mr. Low, to reject the bill, this was negatived; and it consequently passed into a law.
On motion of Mr. James Livingston, the House went into a committee on the Bill for the limitation of actions and suits at law:
Mr. Carman in the chair.
After some time spent thereon, the committee rose and reported the progress they had made, and asked for leave to sit again.
On motion of Mr. Jones, the House went into a committee on the Bill to redress disorders by common informers and to prevent malicious informations:
Mr. Winant in the chair.
The committee having gone through and agreed to the Bill, rose and reported accordingly; when it was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
On motion of Mr. Jones, the House went into a committee on the Bill for the more effectual discovery of the death of persons beyond sea, or absenting themselves, on whose estates lives do depend:
Mr. Van Orden in the chair.
The committee having gone through and agreed to the Bill, rose and reported the same; it was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
On motion of Mr. Jones, the House went into a committee on the Bill against buying and selling of offices:
Mr. Low in the chair.

On motion, the House went into a committee on the Bill for rendering the proceedings on writs of mandamus, and informations in the nature of a quo warranto, more speedy and effectual:
Mr. Savage in the chair.
The committee having gone through and agreed to the Bill, rose and reported the same: it was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
The House went into a committee on the Bill for ascertaining the measure of land:
Mr. Brooks in the chair.
The committee having gone through and agreed to the Bill, rose and reported the same: it was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
A message was received from the Senate by Mr. Townend, and Mr. Yates, informing that the Senate had passed the Bill to prevent forcible entries and detainers, without amendment; and that they had passed the Bill to regulate the repacking of beef and pork for exportation, with amendments: the consideration thereof was postponed.
Mr. Van Cortlandt, from the committee appointed to examine all expiring laws, and to report on the same; moved for leave and brought in a Bill further to continue the office of State Auditor; which was read a first time and ordered a second reading.
Mr. Jones moved for leave and brought in a Bill for the suppression of immorality; and a Bill for dividing this State into counties; which were read a first time and ordered a second reading.
Adjourned till 10 o'clock to-morrow.
