AN ODE written on NEW YEAR'S DAY.

The setting Year in Shades of Night,
Has hid its Head from Mortals Sight,
And like a Dream is fled :
Past Joys or Griefs, whose Pow'rs controul
And drive with rapid Sway the Soul,
Are mingled with the Dead.

Lo ! a New Year with dawning Ray,
Its blushing Face does now display :
Propitious may it shine !
If Health, if Peace, if Competence
Their balmy Blessings still dispense,
Each earthly bliss is thine.

As Summer Winter, Winter Spring,
And Spring the Summer on does bring,
So rolls the Round of Life :
The Year's Vicissitudes display
(Just Emblems of the human Day)
A pleasing anxious Strife.

Who knows if over-ruling Fate.
Another Year's protracted Date
May for thy Life prepare ?
Then use the present, while you can,
Its fleeting Moments wisely scan,
Nor trust a future Year.
