To the Voters of Fairfax County.
Fellow Citizens—As a candidate for your suffrages at the approaching election, I feel it a duty incumbent on me, publicly to meet and rebut any erroneous charge that may have been circulated to the prejudice of my private or political character.
I have recently heard (with no small degree of astonishment) that a report has been circulated in the lower part of this county, charging me with having acknowledged myself a Federalist of the old John Adams party. This report is utterly groundless. Would any rational man in my situation, an aspirant for political promotion, seek to attach himself to an obnoxious party, which has, in fact, ceased to exist? By such a step, nothing could be gained, but every hope of preferment would inevitably be lost. The charge, fellow-citizens, is false, and carries absurdity on its face. I possess a birth-right in the old Democratic Republican party of Virginia, and I have never, by thought, word or deed, departed from the doctrines of that school. The above mentioned charge has been (as I understand) credited and repeated, by several respectable and worthy citizens of the county. To those gentlemen, I can only say, that they have been grossly deceived, and that by giving any further credence or circulation to this report, they will do me serious injustice.
HENRY FAIRFAX.
