A Ten Year Prisoner Escapes from the Ohio Penitentiary.
COLUMBUS, O., April 6.—Charles Elwood, a ten year prisoner from Lucas county, made a bold escape from the penitentiary just before dinner yesterday. Elwood was excused from attending church because of sickness, but instead of going to the hospital he went to his cell on the top of the range. He then escaped through a ventilator on the roof and then descended into Warden Dyer's residence in the prison.
Elwood selected a suit of citizen's clothes from the wardrobe of Mr. Thompson's, the warden's son-in-law. After donning them he went out the front door, but avoided the guard at the front gate by going out the gate near the female department. Several persons saw Elwood in the prison yard, but the prison authorities did not discover his absence until the prisoners were marched to dinner.
