Middleweight champion Carl (Bobo) Olson will try to succeed where Sugar Ray Robinson failed when he invades the light-heavyweight ranks against Joey Maxim this week.
Olson meets the former light-heavyweight titleholder Wednesday night in a scheduled ten-rounder to be televised nationally (by CBS) from the Cow Palace in San Francisco.
Maxim, one of the classiest boxer-punchers in the ring today, foiled Robinson's ambitions to step into the bigger ranks and is the choice in many quarters to do the same to Olson.
The former champ has an overall record of 81 victories and 21 losses. He has knocked out 21.
The busy Olson, undefeated since 1952, has won 62, 30 by kayos and dropped only six.
Both would like a crack at Archie Moore's crown and the latter is plugging for a shot at Rocky Marciano's heavyweight title. Maxim is the number one contender in his division.
Holly Mims of Washington, D. C., fourth-listed contender for Olson's title, takes on Bobby Jones of Oakland, Calif., in a Friday night match at the Philadelphia Arena (NBC).
The week opened with two welterweight bouts in New York City.
Chris Christensen of Denmark met Danny Giovanelli of Brooklyn in the Monday night bout at Eastern Parkway Arena (ABC) and Pat Lowry of Toledo fought Pete Adams of Newark, N. J., in the companion piece (Dumont) at St. Nicholas Arena.
