Bert Gillespie Retires From Alaska Steam Co.

SEATTLE - Bert R. Gillespie, 65, retires today from the Alaska Steamship Co. after 40 years in Pacific Coast transportation.

A veteran of two world wars, Gillespie was a Navy enlisted man in World War I and a Lieutenant Commander in World War II.

He served many years afloat as chief purser of such ships as the City of Seattle for the Pacific Alaska Navigation Co., the H.F. Alexander and Emma Alexander for the Pacific Steamship Co., and the Norco and Northland of the Northland Transportation Co.

Gillespie joined Alaska Steam in 1949 and has been cargo damage prevention agent since 1951.
