We learn from Newbern in North-Carolina, that a News-Paper of the 27th of June last, called The Massachusetts-Spy, No. 17, had been received there, in which was inserted a Piece signed Leonidas, containing sundry particulars relative to the Measures pursued by that government against the Regulators, and highly reflecting upon the conduct and character of Governor Tryon and the disadvantages they labored under for want of a free Press; the Inhabitants of that Town, in order to do themselves and their late Governor justice, tho't themselves compelled in point of honor to call a public Meeting, which was accordingly done on Monday the 29th of July, in order to collect their sentiments respecting the Contents of said Paper; and the Hon. Samuel Cornell, Esq; being appointed Chairman, they came to several Resolutions in vindication of the Character of Governor Tryon, for his integrity and propriety of Conduct in public life; and that the Presses there were ever considered by them as entirely free, and as being open to all Parties, but influenced by none; that therefore the suggestions contained in the said Massachusetts-Spy were considered by them as an high insult and indignity offered to that spirit of constitutional freedom and independance which the Inhabitants of North-Carolina have ever discovered:---. They conclude with the two following Resolves.

That the Paragraphs in the Massachusetts Spy, which have reference to the Measures of Government taken by Governor Tryon against the Regulators, are replete with the basest Misrepresentations, the most palpable Falshoods, and abusive Epithets, and scandalous InveCtives, and that therefore it is a shameful perversion of the Liberty of the Press, and that the Authors and Publishers thereof deserve to be publickly Stigmatized, and loaded with the heaviest contempt and reproach. And,

That the Chairman be directed to request the Sheriff of the County to give orders that the Paper called the Massachusetts-Spy, No. 17, be publickly burnt under the Gallows by the hands of the common Hangman as an open Testimony of the utter Abhorrence and Detestation in which the infamous Production, and its still more infamous Authors, are held by the People of this Government.
